# Create a role

## Add the role

1. Open **Settings → Organization → Roles**. [Open in Teamhood](https://app.teamhood.com/go/settings/roles)
2. Select **Add role**. A column called **New role** appears at the end of the grid, and permits nothing.
3. Open the column's header menu and choose **Rename**.
4. Work down the rows, setting each cell to **No access**, **Read only** or **Read & write**. Each change saves at once.
5. Assign the role to people on **Settings → Organization → Users**, in the Role column.

## Override one type or field

Under **Item types** there is one row per type. Expand a type to get one row per field. A type row that reads **Mixed** means its fields do not all agree.

A field follows its type until you give the field a value of its own. Setting a type's cell resets every field under the type back to following the type.

## Clone, reorder or delete a role

- **Clone** is in the column header menu. Clone copies the role into a new editable role named `<name> (copy)`.
- **Reorder**: drag the grip in a role's header to move that role. Administrator always comes first.
- **Delete** is in the same menu. The dialog first moves anyone holding the role onto another role. Administrator cannot be deleted.

## Permission needed

Adding, renaming, cloning, reordering and deleting roles all need the role-management permission. No row in the grid grants that permission, so administrators manage roles. If the button and the menu entries are missing for you, see [Why was my request refused?](../why-was-my-request-refused/).
