# How do I flag items that need attention?

Add a validation to a field. Every item whose values match the validation's condition then shows a result with your message.

## Add a validation

1. In **Settings → Organization → Fields**, open the field. Watchers, Created on and Updated on cannot have validations.
2. Choose **Validations**, then **Add rule**.
3. Add a condition. With no condition, every item that carries the field shows the result.
4. Choose **Error**, **Warning**, **Info** or **Success**, and write the message.
5. Choose **Save rule**.

## Make a field required

Choose **Add required rule**. The rule starts with the condition that the field is empty. Add a second condition to require the field only in some cases, for example when **Status** is **Done**.

## Find the items it flags

Filter any view by **Validation**, or show the **Validation** column and sort by it. Both appear once at least one field has a validation.

> **A result never blocks a change.** People can still save the item while it shows an error.
