# What is a field?

## What a field is

A field is one thing an item can hold: a due date, an estimate, an owner, a status, a checkbox. Fields are defined once in **Settings → Organization → Fields** and shared by the whole organization.

A field has a **title** and a **type**. The type decides what kind of value the field holds.

## Which types carry a field

The **Applies to** column decides which item types carry the field.

- Name one type, and only that type carries the field.
- Name several types, and all of them carry the field.
- Leave the column empty, and **every** type carries the field.

## Groups and select options

A field can name a **group**. Groups section the item page, the filter picker and the board's field list.

Each option of a select field can be scoped to particular types. A type that stars its own option opens on that option. Every other type falls back to the option marked for all types.

## Deleting a field

If any item has a value set for the field, Teamhood asks you to type the field's title to confirm.

Deleting a field hides the field from every item, view and picker. The values stay on the items, and `Ctrl-Z` brings the field and its values back together.
