# Chart view

## Set it up in the Layout panel

A chart view draws a single chart from the items the view's filters allow. Open **Layout** in the toolbar to set it up:

- **Chart type** picks the shape.
- **Data** sets what is measured and how it is split.
- **Display** sets stacking, sort and how many categories are drawn.

## Pick the chart type

| Type | What it draws |
|---|---|
| **Bar** | one bar per category |
| **Line** | one point per category, joined |
| **Area** | a line with the space under it filled |
| **Pie** and **Donut** | one slice per category |
| **Number** | one figure, no axis |

## Choose what to measure

- **Count (items)** counts items.
- **Count with value** counts items whose field is filled.
- **Count values** counts every value, so a multi-value field counts each one.
- **Distinct count** counts how many different values appear.
- **Sum**, **Average**, **Min**, **Max**, **Median** and **% of total** read number, formula and tracked time fields.

Every choice except **Count (items)** needs a **Field**. For the numeric choices, **Use rolled-up totals** measures each parent item's rolled-up subtree total and skips the items inside that subtree.

## Split and sort the categories

**Break down by** splits each bar into segments. **Stacking** then draws bar and area segments grouped, stacked or 100% stacked. A date field, or a formula that returns a date, on the axis groups by **Day**, **Week**, **Month**, **Quarter** or **Year**.

**Sort** orders categories by value, by label or in their default order. **Show top** draws only the largest categories. **Remaining** groups the rest as "Other" or hides them.

## Open the items behind a bar

Click a bar or a slice. A bucket that holds one item opens that item's detail drawer directly. A bucket that holds several items opens a side panel listing them, and clicking a row opens that item.
