What is a type?
One word for what an item is
Section titled “One word for what an item is”Every item in your organization has exactly one type. The type is the word your organization uses for that kind of work: Task, Bug, Epic, Project. Types are defined once, in Settings → Organization → Types, and every item and every view reads the same list.
A type carries a name and a color, and the color identifies the type wherever an item appears.
What may be created underneath
Section titled “What may be created underneath”Two settings on the type decide what happens at every Add child affordance in the product:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Child types | The types that may be created under an item of this type |
| Default | The one that is preselected |
An empty child-type list means that any type is allowed, and the default falls back to the parent’s own type.
Creation defaults come from the parent’s type and never from the view you are looking at.
How an item of this type opens
Section titled “How an item of this type opens”The type also decides what a plain click on one of its items does:
- Open a drawer beside the list.
- Open the full item page.
- Open the item as a page showing everything underneath the item.
Deleting a type
Section titled “Deleting a type”Deleting a type also deletes the items of that type, and Ctrl-Z brings back the type and those items together.
